Usable energy density

The energy a cell can actually deliver per unit of mass or volume in operation.

Usable energy density describes the energy a cell delivers in operation relative to its mass or volume. It is a central target in battery development because it determines runtime, range or system weight in the final application.

Increasing usable energy density typically involves higher-capacity active materials, optimised electrode design, and reduced losses — including lithium consumed in the first cycles. These changes interact, so improvements are developed and validated experimentally.
