Full-silicon anode

An anode concept in which silicon, rather than graphite, is the dominant active material.

In a full-silicon anode concept, silicon rather than graphite provides the dominant share of the anode capacity. The attraction is silicon's high specific capacity; the challenge is the volume change during cycling and the resulting effects on the electrode structure and interface stability.

Development work therefore addresses binder systems, electrolyte formulation, electrode architecture, lithium dosage and process conditions together. Results depend on the specific chemistry, materials, cell design and test conditions.
