Electrochemical prelithiation

Prelithiation using a controlled current and voltage profile in a suitable cell or process fixture.

In electrochemical prelithiation, lithium is introduced using a defined electrical profile. Because current, voltage and time can be controlled directly, this approach is often used where dosage has to be adjusted precisely and reproducibly.

The approach requires a suitable cell or process fixture, a compatible electrolyte and defined electrical settings. Atmosphere control and handling of the treated electrodes are part of the process definition.

Whether electrochemical prelithiation is the right approach for a project depends on the material system, development stage, equipment environment, target performance and economic requirements. It should be compared against chemical, direct-contact and additive-based approaches rather than assumed to be best.
